Coronavirus: The best offense is a good defense.
Greetings! With all the information aired on the news each day regarding the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) it can seem scary and overwhelming. We are also currently in the Flu Season and it is still going strong. I wanted to provide you with effective tips to bolster your immune system and help prevent the development of cold and flu symptoms. First, some information about whats going around. According to a recent Medscape report “this season there have been at least 22 million influenza illnesses, 210,000 hospitalizations, and 12,000 deaths (that is the flu alone not the coronavirus/COVID-19). The percentage of respiratory specimens that test positive for influenza at clinical laboratories rose to 29.8%, up from 28.4% the week before. Influenza B/Victoria viruses predominated earlier in the season; however, influenza A(H1N1) viruses have increased recently, and the two strains are now approximately equal this season overall.” The predominant virus also varies by age group according to the CDC. The influenza virus is a family of strains (as is the coronavirus). The most commonly reported is Flu A( H1N1) and Flu B (Victoria- at least they gave it a nice name). Flu A is most commonly reported among children and young adults (0-24 years old- 73% are between 5-24years old). Flu B is mostly reported in the 25+years old with 60% occurring in folks 60 years and older. So what does all this mean for you? I have been asked many times if it is appropriate to get a Flu vaccine. I believe this is a personal choice for many and as for some it is required by their profession and/or place of work. Two years ago it was said that the vaccine was ineffective. This year the vaccine seems to be covering the primary strains of influenza circulating currently. The vaccine DOES NOT cover the Coronavirus. At this time there is no vaccination that does. It is very important for you and your loved ones that you follow a few basic precautions such as HAND WASHING alot, COVERING YOU MOUTH if coughing or sneezing, REFRAIN FROM TOUCHING YOUR FACE, STAY HOME if you are showing flu symptoms and running fever. For the average healthy person the flu virus should run its course in roughly 10 days. Now, as for the coronavirus on March 1, 2020 there have been 87 cases reported were people tested positive in the United States and one positive case has developed this week in Florida. This Coronavirus has very similar symptoms as the common Flu and the same precautions should be taken. We are not sending this information out to further alarm anyone but it's my concern that the public is not receiving clear cut information regarding these viruses. If your immune system is running low or impaired for any reason (overworked, overstressed, poor diet, lack of sleep...) you are more susceptible to catching a virus. There have been cases reported where no contact was made with anyone traveling to/from China. The majority of cases reported were were immune compromised individuals. I have put together some IMMUNE SUPPORT TIPS below you can use to build your immune system and combat cold and flu naturally. Many herbs and supplements have even been shown more effective than the vaccines at preventing flu. Check out this article on how Vitamin D plays an important role in flu prevention. Here are a few supplements we recommend you adding at this time to support your body's immune system.
